Girlan IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti Blanco 2021

Girlan's Vigneti delle Dolomiti bianco is an Alto Adige blend of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grown at 448 metres.

Alto Adige, in Italy's far north, produces some of the country's most precise whites, helped by altitude, wide diurnal swings and mineral-rich mountain soils. Girlan is a long-established cooperative based at Cornaiano, above Bolzano, and this bottling is made under the broader Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT rather than the Alto Adige DOC. Pinot Blanc, or Pinot Bianco, makes up half the blend, with the remainder split between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All the fruit is grown on the hillside vineyards of the Cornaiano canton at 448 metres, which is where the wine takes its name; the figure doubles as a local joke, since quattro quattro otto is the Cornaiano way of saying hurry up. Vinification is straightforward and reductive, in stainless steel, to keep the aromatics and the freshness intact.

Drink young, within two or three years, as an aperitif or with antipasti, trout or a plate of speck. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
