Guffens-Heynen Mâcon-Pierreclos En Crazy 2017

En Crazy is Guffens-Heynen's young-vine Mâcon-Pierreclos, its name a nod to the 'crazy Belgian' tag once hung on Jean-Marie Guffens.

Mâcon-Pierreclos is one of the named village appellations of the Mâconnais, on rendzina and brown calcareous soils in the hills west of Mâcon. Guffens-Heynen has been rooted here since 1979, when Jean-Marie Guffens and Maine Heynen bought their first plots, three years after arriving from Belgium at Vergisson; Pierreclos is still the largest part of the 5.65-hectare domaine. En Crazy is built from the younger vines, together with press juice from the Chavigne block, and unlike the barrel-raised cuvées it is brought up in tank, which keeps it direct and unmarked by wood. The vineyard work is no different for it: a single shallow ploughing a year, cover crops mown rather than sprayed, yields around 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, hand picking in successive passes at full ripeness and slow pressing with the juice fractions kept separate.

Good now and for about five years; serve at 10-12°C with roast poultry, creamy pasta or comté.
