Description
Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Southern Rhône red from the appellation that gave France its template for controlled origin.
The name comes from the papal court that settled at Avignon in the fourteenth century and kept a summer residence in the village. In the 1920s the growers, led by Baron Le Roy, drew up rules on boundaries, varieties and ripeness that became the model for the appellation contrôlée system introduced in 1936. Grenache leads the permitted varieties, filled out here by Mourvèdre and Syrah, grown on terraces of clay, sand and the galets roulés, the rounded stones left behind by the river. Guigal has worked the southern Rhône for decades from its base at Ampuis, where Étienne Guigal founded the house in 1946, and the wine is raised in large oak in the patient manner the family applies across its range.
A wine for slow roasted lamb, daube of beef or a plate of hard mountain cheese; serve at around 16 to 18 degrees and give it a few years in the cellar.
