Description
Description
Guigal Condrieu is a white from a tiny terraced appellation on the right bank of the northern Rhône, made entirely from Viognier.
Condrieu sits immediately south of Côte-Rôtie on granite slopes so steep that the vineyards are held up by dry stone walls and worked by hand. By the 1960s the appellation had shrunk to a handful of hectares and Viognier itself was close to disappearing; the revival that followed owes a great deal to Guigal, now the largest grower in Condrieu and its most visible name. Étienne Guigal founded the house at Ampuis in 1946, and his son Marcel and grandson Philippe have run it since. The classic Condrieu is fermented and aged partly in barrel and partly in stainless steel, a balance that gives the wine shape without burying it in oak.
Serve chilled but not ice cold, at about 10 to 12 degrees, with roast chicken, scallops, apricot glazed pork or a mild curry.
