Hans Herzog Montepulciano 2020

Hans Herzog Montepulciano is a dark, structured red made from the central Italian grape, grown organically in Marlborough's Wairau Valley.

Very few growers in the region would attempt this variety, but the estate's stony, heat-holding site on the valley's northern flank ripens it reliably. Swiss-born Hans Herzog and his wife Therese planted here in the 1990s, bringing generations of family winemaking with them. Time in oak builds depth and firm tannin.

Generous and deep, with plum, spice and a solid backbone. Put it on the table at 16–18°C with slow-cooked beef, lamb shoulder, pizza or hard Italian cheese.
