Hans Herzog Nebbiolo 2014

Hans Herzog Nebbiolo is a rare New Zealand Nebbiolo, an organic Marlborough red made in the image of Piedmont, now with years of bottle age.

This is a notoriously hard grape to ripen, and the warm, stony vineyard on the northern edge of the Wairau is one of the few spots in the region that manages it. Therese and Hans Herzog planted the site in the 1990s, farm it organically and keep yields low. The wine had an extended spell in oak before release, and as an older vintage it has picked up plenty of further age in bottle.

Rose, red cherry and tar, with the firm tannin the variety is known for. Decant it, then serve at 16–18°C alongside braised beef, truffle pasta, mushroom risotto or aged cheese.
