Hans Herzog Nebbiolo 2018

Hans Herzog Nebbiolo is one of the very few Nebbiolos grown in New Zealand, an organic Marlborough red modelled on Piedmont's long-lived wines.

The Herzogs came from Switzerland, where the family had made wine for generations, and planted on the stony north side of the Wairau Valley in the 1990s. Free-draining and sun-trapping, it is among the few sites in the region warm enough for this demanding grape. As with the great reds of northern Italy, it spends an extended period in oak before release.

Firm tannin carries red cherry, rose and tar. Give it a decant and serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, truffle pasta, mushroom risotto or aged cheese.
