Description

Hans Herzog Spirit of Marlborough Cabernet Merlot is the estate's flagship Bordeaux-style blend, from an older vintage with long bottle age.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot need more warmth than most sites in the region can give, and the stony, sun-trapping vineyard on the north side of the Wairau is one of the exceptions. The Herzogs, who arrived from Switzerland and planted in the 1990s, farm organically and hold their wines back well before release. This one spent a long time in French oak and has since had considerable time in bottle.

Blackcurrant, plum and cedar with firm, savoury tannin. Decant, then serve at 17–18°C with roast lamb, beef rib or hard cheese.
