Description

Hans Herzog Spirit of Marlborough Cabernet Merlot is a Bordeaux-style red blend and the flagship of this organic estate in the Wairau Valley.

In the 1990s Hans Herzog, a winemaker from Switzerland, and Therese chose the stony northern side of the valley, a warm, free-draining site that ripens grapes most of the region can't. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are two of them. Yields are low, the vines are organic, and this red is aged at length in French oak before it leaves the winery.

Savoury and structured, with blackcurrant, plum, cedar and firm tannin. Decant ahead and pour at 17–18°C with roast lamb, beef rib or hard cheese.
