Description
Harmand-Geoffroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Bossière is a monopole of 0.45 hectares and the smallest premier cru in Gevrey-Chambertin.
La Bossière sits right at the opening of the Combe de Lavaux, the gap in the escarpment above Gevrey through which cold air pours down onto the vineyards below. Harmand-Geoffroy is the vineyard’s exclusive producer, and the vines were replanted in 1988. That position at the mouth of the combe is the defining influence on the wine: it is a very cool site, among the last picked in the village, and the constant fresh winds give the wine a mountainous, upright character with pronounced minerality and drive rather than the density found in Gevrey’s warmer crus. The domaine works traditionally, with destemmed fruit, a long fermentation and a measured proportion of new oak, so the site rather than the cellar sets the tone.
At its best from five years and capable of fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised beef or a mature washed-rind cheese.
