Description
Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Henri Bonneau is an old vine Grenache red from a tiny cellar under the village.
Henri Bonneau farmed only a few hectares, most of it Grenache on the La Crau plateau in the east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where galets roulés lie over red clay and the vines are among the oldest in the appellation. He sold nothing in advance, kept no visitor hours and aged his wines for years in a warren of small old foudres in the cellar beneath his house, deciding bottling by taste rather than by calendar; the family has kept to the same method since his death. The wines are Grenache dominated, with Mourvèdre and Syrah in support, and are made without new oak, fining or any attempt to soften them early. Quantities are very small.
Full bodied, tannic and deliberately old fashioned, it wants roast and braised red meats or game, and years in the cellar; serve at around 17 degrees.
