Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Marie Beurrier 1.5L MAGNUM 2003

Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Marie Beurrier is the domaine's regular bottling, named for a forebear of the family, offered here in magnum.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape sits on the left bank of the Rhône north of Avignon, and Henri Bonneau's vines lie on La Crau, the galet-covered plateau east of the village whose old Grenache gives the appellation its most structured wines. The domaine covers barely six hectares and is worked from a cramped cellar under the village. Fruit is only partly destemmed and fermented with ambient yeast, after which the wine spends years in a collection of old foudres and demi-muids with no new oak and little intervention. Marie Beurrier, named for a forebear of the family, is the estate's regular bottling, drawn from the barrels not selected for Réserve des Célestins, and it is raised in the same unhurried way. This bottling is a 1.5 litre magnum.

Warm, earthy and mature rather than fruit-driven, it suits roast lamb, game birds and mushroom dishes at a large table; decant off the sediment and serve at around 17 degrees.
