Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Marie Beurrier 2018

Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée Marie Beurrier is the first of the domaine's two principal Châteauneuf bottlings.

Marie Beurrier, named for a relative of the family, is the cuvée that sits below Réserve des Célestins in the Bonneau cellar, though below means little here: both come from the same few hectares of old Grenache on the La Crau plateau in the east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on galets roulés over red clay. The difference is one of selection and of time in wood. Henri Bonneau worked with no new oak, no fining and no fixed schedule, ageing in old foudres in the cellar under his house and bottling only when he judged the wine settled, and the family has continued in the same way since his death. Volumes are tiny and release is irregular, which is much of the reason for the domaine's standing.

Full bodied, savoury and structured, it belongs with slow roasted lamb, game and truffled dishes; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
