Henri Bonneau Les Rouliers NV

Henri Bonneau Les Rouliers is a Grenache red released without a vintage from one of the southern Rhône's most private cellars.

Henri Bonneau worked from a small cellar beneath the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a few hectares of old Grenache on the La Crau plateau and a reputation built almost entirely by word of mouth; the domaine has continued in family hands since his death. Les Rouliers is the house's declassified bottling, assembled from the lots that do not go into the two Châteauneuf cuvées and released without a vintage on the label, so that the blend can draw on more than one harvest. Like everything here it takes a long, unhurried élevage in old foudres in a cool damp cellar, and it is bottled only when the wine is judged ready rather than to a schedule.

Rustic, savoury and firmer than expected, it suits daube, sausages and hard cheese; serve at around 16 to 17 degrees.
