Henriques & Henriques Finest Medium Dry 5Yo is the house's entry-level Madeira, made mostly from Tinta Negra and sold in half-litre format.

Tinta Negra is by far the most planted variety on Madeira and the backbone of the island's younger wines. The Henriques entry range is predominantly Tinta Negra with 10 to 20 per cent of Sercial, Verdelho or Malvasia added depending on the age and style, and it is made by a carefully controlled estufa process: the wine is warmed slowly to 45°C and then allowed to cool, a cycle of ninety days, before going to cask for its remaining years. Five years of that oak ageing gives the mellow, soft character of this bottling. Medium dry is the most useful of the styles for the table, tangy enough to work as an aperitif and sweet enough to sit alongside a first course.

Keep it in the fridge as a standby; it lasts for months open. Serve at 12-14°C with smoked fish, white meats, olives or a bowl of soup.
