Henriques & Henriques Malvasia 20Yo is a sweet canteiro-aged Madeira with just over 100 grams of residual sugar and 20.45 per cent alcohol.

Madeira is aged in one of two ways. Everyday wines are heated in tanks by the estufagem method; the finest are aged by canteiro, left in cask in the warm attics of the lodges for years so that heat and evaporation do their work slowly. Henriques & Henriques, based at Câmara de Lobos on the island's south coast, built purpose-designed lodges for exactly this, with casks stacked in the attics against south-facing windows. Malvasia, sold historically as Malmsey, is the sweetest of the classic Madeira varieties, and at twenty years of average age the wine has developed the sort of complexity that only this method produces. What keeps it from cloying is Madeira's defining acidity, which stays high no matter how long the wine sits in wood.

Effectively indestructible once opened, it will keep for months on the shelf. Serve at 14-16°C with chocolate desserts, Christmas pudding or a strong blue cheese.
