Description
Henschke Johann's Garden is a Grenache-led Barossa red drawn from old bush vines on the valley floor.
Barossa Grenache was long treated as fortified material, and the old dry-grown bush vines that survived that era are now among the region's most valuable holdings, giving perfumed, red-fruited wines at moderate weight. The wine is named for Johann Christian Henschke, the Silesian immigrant who planted the family's first vines at Keyneton in 1862. Grenache leads with Mataro and a portion of Shiraz, fermented in open vessels and matured in seasoned French oak so the variety's lift is not covered over.
Serve slightly cool, around 15 degrees, with roast pork, charcuterie or grilled vegetables. Drink over the next six years.
