Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir 2024

Hoddles Creek Estate 1er Pinot Noir is a whole-bunch inflected Yarra Valley Pinot Noir aged eighteen months in cask.

Just 28 rows make this wine, drawn from a small west-facing SRM block in the family's Top Paddock vineyard that slopes gently north and ripens ahead of every other Pinot Noir on the estate. Reflecting that warmer aspect, Franco d'Anna went to roughly 25 per cent whole bunches in the ferment, which sharpens the tannin definition and adds a layer of complexity. Otherwise the winemaking mirrors the estate Pinot Noir: nothing fancy, eighteen months in cask, and bottling without fining, filtration or stabilisation. It is a wine built to evolve.

Savoury and stemmy, with dark cherry and dried herbs over structure that tightens on the finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, ideally with an hour of air. Roast duck, lamb rump or a plate of hard cheese and quince.
