Description
Hoddles Creek Estate PSB Pinot Noir is a close-planted Yarra Valley Pinot Noir fermented in large wooden vats.
One hectare, planted in 2014 to MV6 and Pommard on a south-facing terrace of duplex clay, with rows set at 0.5 by 1.7 metres against the 1.5 by 2.7 metre norm elsewhere on the property. It sits right beside the 1er vines, yet Franco d'Anna calls the two wines "like chalk and cheese", this one carrying less crop and so bringing more concentration and richness than the fine, linear 1er. Fruit came in by hand, went through the destemmer and fermented as whole berries in upright wooden vats of 3,000 litres, chosen because they hold temperature steadily afterwards and draw tannin out slowly. He tastes every six hours to pick the pressing moment. Ten months in barriques, a quarter new.
Black cherry, blood plum and cured meat, with genuine density and tannins that are ripe and finely tuned. Serve at 16 degrees after decanting. Roast duck, beef short rib or a mushroom and marrow pie.
