Description
Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie is a sweet Chenin Blanc drawn from the first selective pass through the domaine's walled vineyard on the plateau above Vouvray.
Vouvray lies on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, where Chenin Blanc grows on clay and flint over the soft tuffeau limestone that also forms the region's cellars. Domaine Huet, founded in 1928 and made famous under Gaston Huet, works three sites: Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Clos du Bourg. Clos du Bourg is the walled vineyard beside the church, with a shallow layer of clay over solid limestone, and it gives the firmest and most mineral of the three wines. Première Trie refers to the first pass through the rows, when pickers take only the ripest and most shrivelled fruit. This bottling was made with a large proportion of botrytised berries, the first time since 1997 that noble rot played so large a part, which adds mouthfeel and complexity to the sweetness. Fermentation is slow and the wine is raised without new oak.
Sweet Vouvray of this weight drinks well on release but is built for decades in bottle. Serve at 8-10°C with Roquefort, foie gras or a tarte Tatin, or simply on its own after a meal.
