Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 2018

Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux is a sweet Vouvray made from Chenin Blanc dried on the vine rather than botrytised.

Vouvray sits on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, on clay over tuffeau limestone, and Domaine Huet has worked its three vineyards there since 1928. Le Haut Lieu is the estate's home site, on the first slope above the town, and gives the most immediately charming of the three. Moelleux, pronounced mwah-lurr and translating roughly as marrow-like, is the middle tier of Loire sweetness, usually carrying between 40 and 60 grams per litre of residual sugar. Huet's are made by passerillage, the grapes shrivelling on the vine, rather than from botrytised fruit, which keeps them fine and clear-edged; the reference point is a good Mosel rather than a Sauternes. This bottling finished at 13 per cent alcohol with 52 grams of residual sugar.

Drinkable now and capable of decades in bottle. It matches cheeses and savoury pork or duck dishes better than most sweet wines, and in richer years fruit-based desserts. Serve at 8-10°C.
