Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec 2019

Le Haut-Lieu Sec is the dry Vouvray from the first vineyard Domaine Huet ever owned, purchased in 1928 on the Première Côte above the Loire.

Vouvray is Chenin Blanc country, a plateau of limestone tuffeau on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, where the same vineyard can give anything from a bone-dry white to a botrytised sweet wine depending on the season. Huet has been the appellation's reference point for the better part of a century and bottles three sites separately. Le Haut-Lieu is a nine-hectare plot of deep brown chalky clay, known locally as aubuis, with the yellow tuffeau bedrock lying as much as four metres down. That richer soil gives the roundest and most supple of the three cuvées, generally the earliest to mature and the first to be ready to drink, though these wines share the longevity of the Clos du Bourg and Le Mont bottlings; the domaine's cellar still holds bottles from the 1940s in good form.

Approachable young and capable of twenty years or more. Serve at 10 to 12°C with oysters, roast chicken or a Loire goat's cheese.
