Description
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is a sweet Chenin made only in top years from a berry-by-berry selection of the ripest fruit.
Vouvray sits on the north bank of the Loire near Tours, where Chenin Blanc grown on tuffeau limestone can be made dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling depending on the season. Le Mont is the highest and firmest of Domaine Huet's three vineyards, a site of clay over flinty limestone that tends to give the most structured and long-lived wines in the range. In the ripest years the domaine makes a Première Trie, picked through the vineyard berry by berry to take only the very ripest fruit, much of it touched by botrytis. This bottling finished with 95 grams per litre of residual sugar, and the balance between that sweetness and the racy acidity of the site is what makes these wines remarkable. They are among the great whites of France and famously long-lived.
Approachable now but built for decades in the cellar. Serve at 8-10°C with fruit-based desserts or, better still, blue cheese and foie gras.
