Description
Hunter McKirdy Samares et Strobiles Pinot Gris Rouge is an unconventional, skin-contact wine from the Alsace village of Zellenberg, made from Pinot Gris and vinified in a style that blurs the line between white and rosé.
Hunter McKirdy is a small négociant venture founded by Paul McKirdy and Jolene Hunter, both formerly of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, farming parcels of Jurassic limestone marl between Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. Bottled as Vin de France to allow freedom from Alsace's formal appellation rules, this cuvée takes its name from samares and strobiles, the winged seeds of elm and larch trees found across the estate's terroir, and is made with extended skin contact more typical of red winemaking.
A distinctive, category-defying wine for the curious drinker, best enjoyed lightly chilled as an alternative to a classic rosé.
