Description
I Monili Tarantino Primitivo IGT is a southern Italian red from the province of Taranto, in the heel of Italy.
Puglia runs down the Adriatic side of southern Italy, hot, sunny and largely flat, and Primitivo is its signature black grape. DNA work in the 1990s established that Primitivo is the same variety as Californian Zinfandel and that both descend from the Croatian Crljenak Kastelanski, though the grape has been at home in Puglia for well over two centuries. Its name refers to how early it ripens, and in the Puglian heat it reaches high sugar levels without difficulty. The Tarantino IGT covers the province of Taranto on the Ionian side of the region, next door to Manduria, the zone that made Primitivo's reputation, and allows a broader range of styles than the stricter denominations.
Suits grilled and barbecued meats, pizza and hard sheep's milk cheeses; serve at around 17 degrees.
