More than 700 pages long, the book set out to treat the region the way fine wine areas like Burgundy and the northern Rhone are usually treated: by soil, and by how individual soils respond to the growing conditions of each year. Anson commissioned new terroir research for it and had maps drawn to a level of detail rarely seen here. Twenty appellation overviews cover history, styles and figures, and the chateau coverage extends to some 800 properties, taking in Fronsac, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Castillon, Francs, Bourg and Blaye alongside the famous names. This is the first edition.

This suits the reader who wants the book as first published, and anyone who needs a Bordeaux reference that goes deeper than appellation summaries. First editions of books this useful tend not to get cheaper.
