Description

Jean-Baptiste Souillard Saint-Joseph Janoune is a mountain Saint-Joseph from an exposed hilltop at 320 metres, raised in just two old barrels.

Saint-Joseph runs some 50 kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its best sites are granite slopes worked by hand. Janoune is a lieu-dit close to Jean-Baptiste Souillard's cellar at Andance, sitting on the granite ridge that forms part of the Châtelet mountain, with views taking in both the Alps and the Massif Central. The vineyard was planted between 1980 and 2000 with massale selection material that yields small berries in compact bunches, closer in appearance to Pinot Noir than to most modern Syrah. It is farmed organically by the cousin of Souillard's father. The wine was fermented with whole bunches and raised for 14 months in two mature 225-litre casks, so there is no new-oak signature. It is fleshy but compact, with inky density and the lift that whole-bunch work brings.

Drinking now with air and worth five to eight years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, peppered beef or roast eggplant.
