Jim Barry Assyrtiko Cellar Release 2021

Jim Barry Assyrtiko Cellar Release is a bottle-aged release of the Barry family's pioneering Clare Valley Assyrtiko.

Australia's first commercial Assyrtiko came from this Clare Valley family, after Peter Barry carried cuttings from a single Santorini vine back to South Australia in 2008 and saw them through quarantine. The vines were first established at Lodge Hill, one of the Clare's highest vineyards at around 480 metres, where cool nights help the grape keep its natural acidity. This 2021 has been held back by the winery and released with extra bottle age, showing lifted white florals and wet stone, a mineral texture and a classic saline lick on the finish. The business itself goes back to 1959, when Jim Barry founded it.

Chill it and pour with salt and pepper calamari, grilled sardines or lemony roast chicken. A little bottle age gives it extra texture at the table, and it's still bright enough for summer drinking.
