Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec 2018

Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec is a tribute to the Clare Valley co-operative where Jim Barry began his winemaking career.

It was at the Clarevale Co-operative in 1947 that the valley's first qualified winemaker started work, and he went on to encourage local growers to move beyond fortified wine by planting Shiraz, Cabernet, Malbec and Riesling. Cabernet and Malbec went into his own first vineyard in 1964, and this blend reflects that pairing, a combination with a long history in the Clare. The family selects distinct parcels from its mosaic of vineyards, with the Malbec coming from Block 81 at Spring Farm, a site about 480 metres up. The 2018 is complex and fine-boned, with dark fruit, forest floor and clove spice over a medium-bodied frame.

Decant for an hour, serve at 16 to 18 degrees and enjoy with roast lamb, beef Wellington or duck with cherries. With some bottle age already, it's drinking well now and will hold for several more years.
