Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec 2021

Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec is one of the Barry family's most serious reds, honouring the roots of Clare Valley winemaking.

The name recalls the Clarevale Co-operative, where Jim Barry began in 1947 and helped steer local growers towards table wine by handing out rootlings of Shiraz, Cabernet, Malbec and Riesling. When he planted his own first vineyard in 1964, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec went in together, and this blend carries that vision forward. Parcels are drawn from several family vineyards across the Clare, including Malbec from the high Spring Farm Block 81. The 2021 is rich and layered, with tobacco, damson plum and blue fruits, great depth and youthful tannins that point to a long life.

Give it time in a decanter and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees alongside a standing rib roast, braised beef cheeks or aged cheddar. It will reward careful cellaring.
