Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec 2022

Jim Barry Clarevale Cabernet Malbec is a powerful yet restrained Clare Valley blend that the family counts among its finest wines.

Winemaking for the Barry family began in 1947 at the Clarevale Co-operative, where Jim Barry urged Clare growers to plant red grapes like Cabernet and Malbec for table wine. His own first plantings in 1964 were of those two varieties, and this wine is the family's modern expression of that original idea. Fruit comes from carefully chosen parcels across the family's Clare vineyards, each with its own soil and aspect. The winery describes the 2022 as perhaps the finest it has made, with blackberry, dark cherry, cigar box and spice, a concentrated core and finely integrated tannins.

Serve at around 17 to 18 degrees after an hour or two in a decanter. Pair with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, venison or a mushroom and red wine pie, or lay it down to develop for many years.
