Jim Barry Lodge Hill Riesling Cellar Release offers the 2016 vintage of this high-altitude Clare Valley Riesling, aged in bottle at the winery.

Riesling is the Clare Valley's signature white, and the Barry family's Lodge Hill vineyard, acquired in 1977, is one of its loftiest sites at about 480 metres in the eastern ranges. Cooler conditions at this height help the grapes hold their acidity as they ripen, giving wines with the structure to improve for many years. Releasing it later lets drinkers enjoy that development without cellaring it themselves: the 2016 still shows intense lime at its core, with lemon tart, ginger and a talc-like minerality leading to a crisp, zesty finish.

For the table, try it with roast pork, Sichuan-style dishes or a simple plate of smoked fish. Serve lightly chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees.
