Jim Barry The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon Cellar Release 2013

Jim Barry The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon Cellar Release is the Barry family's top Clare Valley Cabernet, held back at the winery and released with more than a decade of bottle age.

Jim Barry was among the Clare Valley's early qualified winemakers, and the business he set up in 1959 is still run by his family. The Benbournie takes its name from the family's Benbournie vineyard and sits at the top of their Cabernet range. The Barrys make it to be cellared, and this release has been stored by the winery in proper conditions so it arrives with that time already behind it. Deep crimson in the glass, it shows dark berries, dark chocolate, garden herbs and cedar, with savoury notes of earth and clove and very fine, mineral tannins that carry it to a long finish.

Give it an hour in a decanter and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, a rib-eye off the grill or a wedge of aged cheddar will all stand up to its structure. It is ready to enjoy now and should hold for some years yet.
