Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz 2022

Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz is a single-vineyard Shiraz from the Clare Valley and one of the Barry family's leading reds.

Founded by Jim Barry in 1959, the winery is now run by the second and third generations of his family. The McRae Wood vineyard gives Shiraz of depth and structure, and the wine is matured in oak before release. The 2022 is stylish and composed: blue fruits and warm spice on the nose, then a generous, weighty palate where purple-fruited flavours lead. Layered, fine tannins hold it together and the finish is long and even.

Decant it, or open it an hour ahead, and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. A slow-cooked lamb ragù, venison or a firm sheep's milk cheese all work well. It drinks nicely now and will build further complexity over the next decade.
