Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese 2020

Bernkasteler Lay is the lightest-framed of the Joh Jos Prüm Auslese bottlings, from a gentler slate slope on the edge of Bernkastel.

The Lay lies between the town of Bernkastel and the village of Graach, a south-easterly facing site whose weathered slate and slightly softer gradient give wines of finesse rather than power. In the hands of Joh Jos Prüm it produces Auslese that is delicate and almost light-footed for the Prädikat, with the sweetness carried on a very fine acid line. The estate is based at Wehlen and has been led for decades by Dr Manfred Prüm, now working alongside his daughter Katharina. Nothing about the method has changed in that time: multiple selective passes through the vineyard by hand, whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel, no oak, and bottling with natural residual sugar rather than any addition. The wines are then cellared at the estate and released later than is usual in the region, since they are made to reward keeping.

Give it a decade and it will hold for twenty years beyond that. It suits fruit-based puddings, mature cheddar or duck with fruit; serve at 8-10°C.
