Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a rare selection of the estate's finest Auslese lots, bottled in half-bottle.

The Lay lies just upstream of Bernkastel on the Mosel, a slightly gentler slope of grey Devonian slate that gives wines a touch rounder and more open than those from the steepest sites. Joh. Jos. Prüm has been based at Wehlen since 1911 and works to a settled method: whole-bunch pressing, ambient-yeast fermentation in stainless steel, and a ferment left to stop naturally. A Goldkapsel is not a category in German wine law but a house marker: Katharina Prüm uses it for limited lots of the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger, selected berries with more concentrated juice and usually some influence of botrytis. Multiple passes and severe selection in the vineyard are needed to assemble one. These wines age even longer than a standard Auslese, gradually shedding the impression of sweetness and gaining elegance and depth.

It can be drunk now but will hold for many decades; serve at 8-10°C with fruit-based desserts, crème caramel, or with cheese and richly spiced savoury dishes.
