Description
This is a naturally sweet Mosel Riesling from Graacher Himmelreich bottled under Joh. Jos. Prüm's gold capsule, which marks a stricter selection within the Auslese harvest, in a 375ml half-bottle.
Graach lies on the steep slate slopes of the Middle Mosel between Bernkastel and Wehlen, and Himmelreich is one of its principal sites, on the Devonian slate that gives the valley's Rieslings their firmness. The estate was founded at Wehlen in 1911, when Johann Josef Prüm took his share of a division of the family holding, and the Prüms have lived in the village for more than four hundred years; Dr Katharina Prüm runs it today with her father, Dr Manfred Prüm. Twenty-two hectares are worked across some of the steepest slopes in the region, and around ninety per cent of the vines are ungrafted, the slate itself keeping phylloxera at bay; many plantings are over sixty years old. Fermentation is spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, and the wines rest on their lees for an extended period before bottling, which is where the house's characteristic reductive edge comes from.
It is drinkable now and will keep for decades in a cool cellar. Serve at 8-10°C with a fruit tart, a blue cheese such as Roquefort, or on its own after a meal.
