Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL 2022

A gold capsule Auslese from the Graacher Himmelreich, made in tiny quantity in a year that gave up its botrytis reluctantly.

The Graacher Himmelreich is one of the classic vineyards of the middle Mosel, a steep expanse of blue Devonian slate above the village of Graach, and Joh Jos Prüm, based next door at Wehlen, has long worked parcels there. The estate's wines are known for combining very low alcohol with high acidity and the capacity to age for half a century. Gold capsule bottlings are, as Katharina Prüm describes them, limited lots of the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger, selected grapes with more concentrated juice and usually a degree of botrytis. Producing them this year took multiple passes through the vineyard and severe selection, with picking continuing into the last days of October. Botrytis was rare, but what was gathered accounted for roughly a third of the fruit that made the wines. Fermentation runs on natural yeasts and the wine is bottled with substantial residual sugar.

Fine young and built to last for decades, losing sweetness and gaining harmony as it goes; serve at 8-10°C with a fruit-based dessert or crème caramel, and with cheese or spicy dishes as it ages.
