Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL Museum Release 375ml 2011

This is a late-released Goldkapsel Auslese from Joh Jos Prüm, drawn from the Graacher Himmelreich and held back in the estate cellar as a museum release.

The Prüm family has been at Wehlen on the Middle Mosel for generations, and the estate run by Dr Manfred Prüm and his daughter Katharina is among the most closely watched addresses in Germany. Graacher Himmelreich sits on grey Devonian slate with a deeper, slightly richer soil profile than the neighbouring Sonnenuhr sites, and its wines tend to be broader and rounder while keeping the house signature of low alcohol and cool, taut acidity. Katharina Prüm describes the Goldkapsel bottlings as limited lots selected from the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger, more concentrated fruit usually touched by a measure of botrytis and capable of ageing for decades. Picking is done in successive passes by hand, the musts ferment slowly with ambient yeasts in stainless steel, and the wines are bottled with their natural residual sugar and released late. A museum release adds further years of cellar age before the bottle leaves the estate.

Drinking well now and good for decades more, it suits fruit-based desserts, crème caramel or hard mature cheese, and handles spiced dishes better than most whites. Serve at 8-10°C.
