Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

A magnum of Goldkapsel Auslese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the vineyard most closely identified with Joh Jos Prüm.

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr rises directly above the village of Wehlen on blue Devonian slate, its sundial erected in 1842 by an ancestor of the present family so that workers on the slope could tell the time. Joh Jos Prüm holds a substantial share of the site, and the wines made here by Dr Manfred Prüm and his daughter Katharina are the reference point for the Mosel style of low alcohol, high acidity and natural sweetness. Fruit for this bottling was shrivelled rather than botrytised and fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. The house method is unchanged: hand picking in successive passes, slow spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, no oak and late bottling, followed by a longer wait before release than almost any other Mosel estate. The magnum format slows maturation further, and these wines are known for needing patience before they show their full range.

Expect more than a decade before it opens out fully, with decades of life beyond that. Serve with fruit desserts, foie gras or blue cheese at 8-10°C.
