Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL Museum Release 2003

This museum release of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel has been cellared at the estate and held back for release only now.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr takes its name from the sundial built into the slope in the nineteenth century so that pickers could tell the time, and it is the site most closely identified with Joh. Jos. Prüm. The vines grow on grey Devonian slate on a very steep south-facing wall above the Mosel at Wehlen. Manfred Prüm regarded 2003 as a totemic vintage for the estate, at a time when many in the Mosel struggled with the heat and some resorted to acidification. He believed its quality and style recalled his great wines from the very warm 1959. Katharina Prüm, who leads the estate today, notes that the wine has still not quite reached its peak but is beautiful to drink now. Fruit is hand-picked in successive passes through the slope, fermented slowly and cool and allowed to stop of its own accord, and the gold capsule marks the strictest selection within the Auslese harvest. Prüm wines are famously closed and slightly spritzy when young, and this is what two decades in the estate's cellar produce.
