Description
This is a museum release of an Auslese Goldkapsel from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, held at the estate and released in half-bottle because the format has matured a little faster than the 750ml.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr takes its name from the sundial built into the slope in the nineteenth century so that pickers could tell the time, and it is the site most closely identified with Joh. Jos. Prüm. The vines grow on grey Devonian slate on a very steep south-facing wall above the Mosel at Wehlen. The estate is led by Katharina Prüm, the fourth generation of the family. Where the intensity of the 2003 wines drew on the ripeness of that vintage, 2006 was one of the great botrytis years on the Mosel, with a racy complexity the family compares to 1976. Katharina considers the 750ml bottles still too young to release as museum wines, while the halves are ready. Fruit is hand-picked in successive passes, fermented slowly and cool with the estate's own yeasts and stopped naturally, leaving the sweetness of an Auslese balanced by the acidity the Mosel provides. The gold capsule marks the strictest selection within the Auslese harvest.
Ready now and in no hurry. Serve at 8–10°C with a fruit-based dessert, a Roquefort or on its own; restaurants will find it pours well by the glass.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
