Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Mosel Riesling grows on steep terraces of weathered Devonian slate above the river, worked entirely by hand, and Kabinett is the lightest of the traditional Prädikat levels: picked at modest ripeness, fermented to low alcohol and left with gentle residual sweetness that acidity keeps in check. Joh. Jos. Prüm at Wehlen has been the reference address for this style since 1911 and is now run by Katharina Prüm. The estate makes no attempt at power, and the Kabinetts are the clearest expression of that: filigreed wines of intensity rather than weight. Across the Prüm sites the scale builds steadily from Bernkastel through Graach to Wehlen, so the same picking decisions and the same slow, spontaneous cellar work in unheated conditions produce noticeably different results from one slope to the next. Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the steep south-facing amphitheatre marked by its sundial, is the estate's home site and gives the most complete of the Kabinetts. The magnum format slows the wine's development further.

Excellent now and set to gain for a decade or two in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with seafood, white meats, lighter Asian dishes or as an aperitif.
