Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

This is Prüm's Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese in magnum, from the estate's home vineyard and the most powerful of its three village sites.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr takes its name from the sundial built into the slope in the nineteenth century so that pickers could tell the time, and it is the site most closely identified with Joh. Jos. Prüm. The vines grow on grey Devonian slate on a very steep south-facing wall above the Mosel at Wehlen. At Spätlese level the wines stay light in body while gaining markedly in flavour intensity and depth of character, with more flesh and power than the Kabinetts though not necessarily more perceptible sweetness. Katharina Prüm regards this as the most versatile category at her table. Hand-picked fruit ferments slowly and cool with the estate's own yeasts and stops of its own accord, leaving racy fruit set against savoury, slate-like minerality. The magnum format slows maturation further, which suits a wine already built for decades.

Delicious now and set to gain complexity for many years; the format suits a long table. Serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, fresh crab or a fragrant curry.
