Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GOLDKAPSEL 2020

A Goldkapsel Auslese from Joh Jos Prüm out of the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, one of the steepest slate slopes of the Middle Mosel.

Zeltingen lies just downstream of Wehlen, and its Sonnenuhr takes its name from a second sundial cut into the hillside above the village. The site is stonier and more exposed than the Wehlener slope and its wines carry a firmer, spicier mineral line, which suits the sweeter Prädikat levels well. Joh Jos Prüm, based at Wehlen and directed by Dr Manfred Prüm with his daughter Katharina, works these vineyards with hand picking in repeated passes, gentle whole-bunch pressing and long, cool spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel, stopping short so that natural grape sugar remains in the finished wine. Katharina Prüm describes the Goldkapsel wines as limited lots chosen from the best Auslese of the vintage, made from selected, more concentrated fruit usually showing some botrytis, which lose a little sweetness over the years while gaining elegance and depth. They are famously reserved in youth and released later than most.

Approachable now but built for several decades, it works with fruit tarts, blue cheese or spiced Asian dishes. Serve at 8-10°C.
