John Duval Annexus Mataro 2022

John Duval Annexus Mataro is a varietal Barossa Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre, from the Duval family.

Mataro has been grown in the Barossa since the nineteenth century and is usually hidden in blends, so a single-variety bottling is something of a treat. Father and son team John and Tim Duval chose it for the Annexus series to show what the grape brings to their Plexus red. The 2022 is dark and savoury: black plum, blue fruit, pepper, dried herbs and smoky earth, with sage and a hint of amaro, well-defined tannins and a slatey finish.

Decant for half an hour and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. It loves slow-braised lamb shoulder, cassoulet or a spiced beef ragù.
