Kenzie Duet 2022

Kenzie Duet is a Hawke's Bay blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah.

Blending Pinot Noir with Syrah is not orthodox anywhere, which is part of the point. The Pinot, four-fifths of the wine, comes from the Mangatahi vineyard inland, while the Syrah is from Bridge Pā, an organically farmed site on free-draining sandy loam over deep alluvial gravels with layers of volcanic pumice running through. The Pinot went in as whole clusters and stayed on skins a fortnight, foot-trodden twice and gently. The Syrah was mostly taken off its stems into open-top fermenters, about fifteen per cent of the bunches kept. Both fermented on wild yeast before going to old barriques for natural malolactic and four months of maturation. No fining, no filtration, minimal sulphur.

Perfumed and light on its feet, with red cherry, pepper and a fine savoury thread, and tannins that barely announce themselves. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, slightly chilled. Duck, grilled quail, roast pumpkin with feta, or a pizza with fennel sausage.
