Kenzie Heretaunga Syrah 2022

Kenzie Heretaunga Syrah is a cool-climate Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay.

The Heretaunga vineyard lies on a young riverbed in the Gimblett Gravels, ground made of greywacke stones dumped by a flood in the late 1800s and exposed ever since. Gravel, stone, silt, clay and sand drain hard, so the vines root deep and build extensive systems, and the high stone content holds heat through the day and throws it back at night. That is how Rhône and Bordeaux varieties ripen here despite the bay's cooling influence. Fruit was destemmed into open-top fermenters with as many whole berries as possible, cold-soaked for a few days, fermented spontaneously and hand-plunged daily over eighteen days, then given nine months in puncheons and barriques.

Medium-bodied and savoury, flush with red berries, black pepper and a dry, leafy edge, with alcohol at 12 per cent keeping the whole thing light on its feet. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Lamb cutlets, a peppered steak, roast eggplant with tahini, or olives and charcuterie.
