Description
Kientzler Pinot Gris Kirchberg Grand Cru is a dry Pinot Gris from the warmest of the three grand crus above Ribeauville.
Kirchberg de Ribeauville faces due south on a steep terrace of marl, limestone and sandstone directly above the town, and it is the sunniest and earliest of the crus the estate works, giving broader, riper wines than the neighbouring Osterberg. Kientzler holds a well placed parcel there and treats it as one of the estate's flagships. Fruit is hand picked, whole cluster pressed and fermented cool in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation, then aged on fine lees; the family's stated aim is to finish the noble varieties dry, which on a site of this ripeness takes careful timing at harvest. At 1.1 grams per litre of residual sugar the wine is fully dry.
Powerful, dry and textured, it stands up to roast veal, poultry in cream, mushrooms and mature cheese; serve at around 11 degrees.
