Description
Kientzler Pinot Gris Osterberg Grand Cru comes from a cool, late ripening marl slope on the hill above Ribeauville.
Osterberg lies on the flank above Ribeauville, a steep grand cru facing east to south east on deep marl with veins of limestone and gypsum. The clay holds water, which slows ripening and pushes the harvest late, and the wines are known for weight and firm structure rather than early charm. Kientzler has parcels here for both Riesling and Pinot Gris and works them with the estate's usual restraint: hand picking as grand cru rules require, whole cluster pressing, cool fermentation in stainless steel and no malolactic fermentation. At 33.3 grams per litre of residual sugar this is an off dry style rather than a sweet wine.
Full and gently off dry, it suits foie gras, roast pork with apple, smoked fish and washed rind cheeses; serve at around 11 degrees.
